ARRA
The federal stimulus legislation known as the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 contains
authorization for approximately $19 billion to fund Health Information
Technology (HIT) initiatives over the next six years. The overall goal
of ARRA federal stimulus funds that have been designated for
Health Information Technology (HIT) is to create a nationwide
health information infrastructure that supports recording, sharing and
use of health information in a way that improves health.
The greatest amount, approximately $17 billion, is earmarked
for Medicare and Medicaid to incent qualified providers to adopt and
achieve "meaningful use" of electronic health
records (EHRs) in their practices. The Office of the National
Coordinator (ONC) has also been appropriated grant funds in the amount
of $2 billion for which organizations and states can apply.
